Drama and Movement Therapy

Personal development through the use of creative arts

Drama and Movement Therapy is an expressive form of psychotherapy where the creative arts are utilised within the therapeutic relationship in order to communicate and explore feelings and issues.

All Creative Arts Therapists are Master level clinicians who use a diverse range of psychological approaches to work with clients and always focus on psycho-emotional development of the individual and never the aesthetic quality of the art product.

Karin uses a broad range of creative stimuli in her approach: to communicate and express, to relate to others, and to release inner thoughts and feelings. To encourage expression, Drama and Movement Therapy uses various art forms such as stories, role-play, art, instruments, sounds, games, objects, play and movement. Through this indirect and non-interpretative way of working, people can find different ways of expressing themselves, where they might otherwise find speaking difficult. Clients develop and grow through self-awareness, interaction with others, and self-exploration.

Drama and Movement Therapy is non-confrontational using a client-centred approach.

Anyone, anywhere, at any stage in their life, can benefit from Drama and Movement Therapy!

Clients have a choice whether or not they want to come to the sessions. Therapists always work with the client through empathy, supporting, listening and observing.

In a therapy session, the therapist may:

  • encourage and explore different types of movement through images, improvisation, music and/or instruments.

  • bring stories and encourage role-play to explore feelings around individual themes.

  • use various objects for example, puppets, toys and materials to encourage expression and explore feelings.

  • employ art materials to assist with self-reflection and self-exploration.
